Gurdjieff; Anti scientific cult leader or Indispensable philosopher genius?

Where do I start with Gurdjieff? Was Gurdjieff an evil guru like Crowley, LaVey, Parsons, Freud, and Lacan?

Also, are there any other figures like Gurdjieff who propose forms of practical askesis you can carry out on a daily basis, as part of your ordinary consciousness throughout the day, in addition to a regimen of yoga/meditation? I've been experimenting with willpower techniques, like forcing myself to be conscious and decide on every act I make before I make it, so nothing is ever automatic or reflexive.
