You know what I love? Any display of competency is greeted with an extreme passive aggression disguised as humor. If you know how to do a physical task regularly assigned to a tradesman or technician instead of simply hiring someone else to do it for you, the bugman will laugh and talk about how “manly” you are. Self-reliance is looked upon with fear by many of these people who subconsciously understand that they have never tried to achieve independence for themselves. For fucksake people need to read some Aldo Leopold or Sigurd Olson and get their shit on straight.

The internet and the library are your friends. Start in a civilized area or a city where you can’t die from hunger, exposure, or thirst, and teach yourself orienteering. Parks are great for this and once you understand the basics you can set up a course for yourself. YouTube helped me with this. Other than that, go and obtain a Wilderness First Responder certification. It’s the keycard you need to get into any outdoor guiding job or internship. Actual water-finding takes experience and skill developed with people who know what they’re doing, and understanding topography and how to locate yourself within it is an exercise in mindfulness. Lots of outdoor rec organizations will house and feed you for free in exchange for logistical support and manual labor, and these positions are often described as internships. Organizations like NOLS run these. In that position you can learn from their guides, go hiking with them and gradually transition into actual mountaineering fieldwork. Start going out on your own and document in a spreadsheet what you traverse, climb, etc, and learn about expedition zoning and permitting procedures I. The areas you want to operate in, and people will take you more seriously when you want to take their clients out into the middle of nowhere.

I’m not saying that people shouldn’t play video games at all, everything is fine in moderation. But when they replace what real life provides for us in spades, it’s time to stop the psychological masturbation.

I lived I. The wilderness for three years. Now that I have returned to the world of men from my long journey, I feel more and more each day that I cannot live without the wild, where everything is so absolute, so deadly, and honest. I feel claustrophobic sleeping in a building again, or watching the sun go down and not worrying about my light source, or wether the shelter I made with my own hands will protect me. I miss her, that world which I love, where the quiet stillness of massive silent things is still known and cherished.

I’m going back. I cannot live without it.
