I read this the other day, and I've tried to let it marinate. But, I'm not sure I understood what message Gogol was trying to convey.
Other than that poverty is awful, St Petersburg is cold, and the bureaucracy Holy Mother Russia was infected by some sort of top-down inhumane social contagion of pettyness and status seeking.
And I'm not sure I understood the ending. Was the paranormal stuff a red herring?

I really enjoyed the prose and the stylistic elements. It was pretty funny at times. But I think I might have missed the ethos.
