It's James Joyce's birthday. Say something nice about him. Or else.

speaking for myself, I'm bipolar and don't take meds, so when the depressive state hits its hits like a wave. Just become increasingly distressed about the world and my place in it.

rec me some good chinskhits, I've read a lot of them and am struggling to find more with lots of chaps translated.
I remember in RI he implements maoism among his slaves to get them to work harder and i worried he would get put into a reeducation camp. Do you read them in chinese? Been unironically considering learning just to read more chinkshit.

Someone's going to tell you to Start With The Greeks. That's retarded. That's like throwing a toddler in the open ocean. They won't learn to swim and they'll end up hating the water anyway. Start contemporary and work your way backwards.
>but what contemporary-
Look up the winners and finalists of these prizes (I'm assuming you want to read fiction):
Man Booker Prize
National Book Critics Circle Award
Pulitzer Prize
National Book Award
PEN/Faulkner Award
Rhea Award for Achievement in the Short Story
New York Times Notable Books of the Year
etc, among others. Just go through and pick books that sound interesting. Then go to the library and get reading. That's it. That's all you have to do.

I just finished it after being worried about the same thing, It was worth it. Not to say it was an enjoyable book for me, but I enjoyed being challenged by it, it's not the references so much that are the challenging part but the stylistic changes he makes through the novel really throw you off.

If you wanted a reading list, I would start with the Oddysey, you probably don't need the Illiad but it's obviously gonna be helpful. Theirs a few references to Greek Mythology (Stephen Dedalus for example, a main character, is a reference to the father of Icarus who flew too close to the sun and has his wings melted) but you could probably get away with Read a lot of Shakesphere, Hamlet is the main one talked about so that's a must but I'd also read the big four tragedies.

The big one that's going to throw you off is the Irish stuff. I'd say understanding the political situation in Ireland around 1904 when the book is set is just as important as the Greek stuff. You need to read Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man anyways because Stephen Dedalus is the main charecter and Ullyses is in a way a sequel too it. Use that and Dubliners to get a good understanding of what was going on with Irish Nationalism, understanding what Joyce's position on it was and understanding who Parnell was.

Use SparkNotes or Wikipedia if it helps. I read an overview of Ullyses before I started then read a chapter summary and analysis as I finished each chapter. It's really helpful because at times it's hard to tell what is actually happening and whats a manifestation of Bloom's mind. I plan to read it again when I'm older and more well read, people say that it's a book that can't be fully appreciated until the second read.

Hope that helps!
