What authors or books go further in the meaning and characteristics of friendship through charismatic (and no homo) characters that fight and find value in themselves and life with a relationship that while no ideal (in the sense of it being pure and untouched), gives a meaning and insight to what it means to long and feel pain for someone in a non romantic context?

It's from Kodansha's English library. So it is a Japanese copy, but the book is in English. It includes Schoolgirl and a few other short stories as well.
