There is a theory that people are more themselves on the internet than they are in normal everyday social interactions.

That, precisely because we treat the internet as something trivial and innocuous, we feel much more enabled to act upon our natural compulsions free of the normal social expectations or contraints.

I think this is what he is trying to say, that our interactions in reality is a 'spectacle' for others but on the internet people are free to actualise their true self.
