I used to be a copy editor for a newspaper.

We didn't capitalize them because it's not a proper noun like African or American. We used AP style, and it also says that you shouldn't use "blacks" or "whites" to refer to a group of people. However, its okay to refer to people as "Jews" because you're not reducing someone to a single color.

Thank the lord that I left that job before they introduced in 2019 the statutes for "Latinx." They'll probably add "folx" in this year's edition too.
