I'm starting to see this book series being recommended on the other boards. Is it worth a read?

The reviews appear very polarising and generally speaking 4chan has shit taste in literature with so many 'young adult' posters. I don't want to take a risk by cracking upon a multi-book arc series because I don't like leaving unfinished business.

You got through the first book so you got over the first hurdle, but two consistent issues that keep popping up for people with Malazan is the fact it's incredibly front-loaded and doesn't explain shit in the first book, as well as the fact it doesn't immediately make you familiar or get to know the characters which is something modern readers expect. It's all about relating to characters as quickly as possible today. And then the second jumps ship to another continent once again throwing you in deep.

Somebody redpill me on Malazan? Is it good fantasy? I here a lot of people say it's the best fantasy ever written, but I also hear that about books I hated such as WoT and Name of the Wind.

Malazan is only difficult because you have no fucking idea what's going on for the first book and a half.

It's not as good as reddit or goodreads would have you believe, but it's not nearly as bad as /sffg/ would have you believe. As an anon said previously it's pretty bloated and the characterization is fairly thin, but the world building is excellent and there are some genuine moments of excellent story telling.

Overall a 7/10, higher if you're the kind of person who reads for world building and magic systems.
