as far as the stuff about it coming off as totally un-rehearsed and yet coldly calculated, i wholly agree. Infinite Jest for me is like comparable to graffiti. It is the graffiti of the meme trilogy. Ulysses is most certainly the prime inspiration for a lot of his writing in it, but Ulysses feels much more organized and intentional.
I guess maybe Ulysses is a very legible and easily readable piece of graffiti, whereas IJ is one of those portraits with highly stylized letters with lots of arrows and paint splashes
i'm a very visually oriented person and reading was admittedly my second love to art and theater, so forgive if my analogy is shit

you read a chapter, and then you go to the sparknotes and you realize a bunch of shit was said/happened that you didn't even realize because you weren't paying enough attention to care because there's no point in caring about autistic babbling
yes, the text is "brilliant" and dense, but so is the 'tarded rambling of a bumbling idiot, and Ulysses rides the thin line between the two\
as they say, "a monkey at a typewriter will eventually type Shakespeare"
all that being said, yes, it can be a fun book to read when you are in the proper mood for it, but most of the time, it's just frustrating and feels like a waste of time
