Tolkien was not interested in writing a thriller, and his other works were far beyond just writing a story for the sake of a story. His work was more a place for languages, cultures, history, fables, etc. It’s the creation of the Secondary World, the mythology. While I personally think The New Shadow could have been decades ahead of its time[1], I can understand Tolkien’s reasoning…
