Kinda sucks knowing nearly all of Western art found in museums today that were created within the last 4 decades are only there because they are treated as pieces of stock, with nothing at all about merit being the reason why it became famous but its price tag instead.

Not to mention museums taking art out of its natural context and just hamfisting it into their building.

Can you give an example of you being moved? When I mentioned being moved, I was thinking of quite a lot of experiences that would be considered being mundane.

Using the word excellence I think is going to confuse the situation. Maybe I should just give specifics rather than just names.

In Southern California, and what I've seen over the internet, comes across as very apathetic and very against passion, the romantic, and the heroic.

In university for me, everyone seemed very aware of irony, social masks and talking bluntly about social etiquette, about how idealism is very naive in a very bad way, usually because it is a symptom of being privileged and ignorant.

That wasnt as specific as what I was hoping for but I hope you get what im going for.

Maybe a specific could be your quotations around "our culture". Making a claim about our culture seems very pretentious, and people feel very comfortable easily dismissing the person who makes the claim, regardless of what they are saying. I could very easily see this becoming a conversation of who has how much social capital, seeing if a person is worthy of making such claims.

Consider that, and imagine being at a party or with a group of friends, and then someone starts waxing poetic about something like the moon or a sunrise. People will quickly I think dismiss the person in a similar way and for similar reasons

I havent read much of 20th century philosophy, but Heidegger's Being and Time is really great. Especially if youve read Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and Aristotle in general.

I mean just his method alone, and the absolute focus he spent on being self-aware while writing is inspiring.

I have a feeling Ill like Wittgenstein and other analytics once I get to them.
