Does anyone know how and when the modern day pagan religions got started? I'm having trouble finding information on this and books written by the people involved in starting this would be very helpful. Books about an overall history of modern paganism would also be helpful.

The Mabinogion is the core of the Welsh mythological cycles, including some of the oldest and more core Arthurian lore.

And if you like the general Welshness of the thing, you can read The Codex Aneirin, which is largely believed to be the work of a single sixth century writer: Aneirin with a few medieval additions, and notably features the epic poem Y Gododdin, an elegy for the kingdom of Gododdin, which fell against the Anglian kingdoms of Bernacia and Deira: it's from such a murky time period that it can't be ascertained what in the poem is fact, and what is fancy, so it occupies that mysterious transitional state, where it's likely closer to a poetically embellished account than a true legend.
