This is only tangentially related but there's a very rare sort of writer who comes to realize the shortcomings of the values of the milieu they grow up in and socialize in. Take Thomas Mann for example, what is The Magic Mountain if not the swan song of post-medieval european culture, of humanism, enlightenment, and everything else that accompanied them being nothing but a fart in the wind, an ineffective joke in the face of modernity as represented by WW1, a war that was as inhuman and mechanical as it was senseless, a modernity that the very essences of humanism and enlightenment were instrumental in bringing about? What did Settembrini's humanistic wankery amount to in the end when Hans leaves for the frontlines?

Why is there such a shortage of graded readers or just German material at all in English when every other euro language has a bajillion of those? Do you happen to know any that are particularly helpful for those still stuck in that awkward position between intermediate and beginner?
