No, OP, it is not possible to write something so depressing that other people will not read it.

He walked out in the gray light and stood and he saw for a brief moment the absolute truth of the world. The cold relentless circling of the intestate earth. Darkness implacable. The blind dogs of the sun in their running. The crushing black vacuum of the universe. And somewhere two hunted animals trembling like ground-foxes in their cover. Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it.

Hey /lit/ i'm looking for some post-apocalyptic books. Care for some good suggestions?

I already bought The Road, just so you know.

Does it ever get better?

>“The Road was the most crushingly bleak book I've ever read. The description of post-nuke winter, the ways humans react in their various schemes for survival, the gut-wrenching participation in a Hobbesian world where nobody will ever be comfortable again, safe again, or be able to relax or even let your guard down again. For those born into it, it will be all they know, maybe they’ll survive like Middle Ages peasants. The nightmare will be for those who knew something else. Reduced to the roles of herd-animal, scavenger, and prey, played out among the bones of a forever past, knowing you have nobody to blame but yourself, and nobody cares, and nobody is ever coming to make it better,” wrote Tom from New York.
So..... Over-rated drooling snot or not?

I have to read this book for school, and I can't fucking stand it. So tell me /lit/, what is your official tactic for reading books you can't fucking bear.

inb4 stop reading.

Sup /lit/. I used to read a lot of books as a kid, and I still read occasionally. But I'm looking to start reading a lot more. I kind of miss it, and I know there's some really good books out there that I haven't read. I'm not looking for overly philosophical stuff (I'm not an overly intellectual type, really), I just want to read a few good books that will engage me and make me think. What do you gents recommend?
Pic related, it's the last book I read that wouldn't get me punched in the face by one of you.

You know what? I didn't care for it.

There were instances of beautiful prose, but all in all, I thought it was quite dull at times. I don't understand why everyone is head over heels with this book.

I read it some time ago and I'm surprised that /lit/ loves it. Am I the only one who feels this way?

So he doesn't use apostrophes in contractions, but he does use them for possessives.

Silly author tricks. And he really didn't need to do it. His writing is good enough that little clevernesses such as this just distract from the reading.

I like how he snapshots every scene - very terse descriptions of the physical environment.

This might be the grimmest, most hopeless end-of-the-world novel I've ever read. And I've read a lot.
