Yeah, the only major theme that this poster missed was capital punishment and the degradation of prison.

the version in my picture, edited by graurerholz and miles, contains a few different introductions that Burroughs wrote for Naked Lunch, including one after he (relatively) sober. Those texts help explain some of what was happening when he wrote Naked Lunch.

If the book makes you feel uncomfortable, confused or disgusted, that's kind of to be expected. Burroughs wanted to capture the emotional depravity of drug addiction, the culture and society that surrounds it, and also the general state of confusion and irrational thinking. Because of these factors (confusion, disgust, unease) a lot of people don't like the book.

Forgive me for being a pleb, /lit/, but how am I supposed to read this?
I think I get that it's supposed to capture the sensation of a drug addict blundering through life in a barely-sane haze, or something, and I respect that enough to keep reading, but I feel there's a lot of it flying over my head.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to read this. Only just started and I have no idea what's going on. Is there a mindset I should have when reading it or should I just take from it what I can?

Okay, I'm 5 pages in.

What the fuck am I reading? It just seems to be a jumble of words with only 10 or so being coherent for every 100 of rambling.
