Economic planning has been shown to work, example being the Project CyberSIN program in Chile in the early 1970's. This prototypical computer system was so effective that it managed to maintain something like 70% distribution of economic goods even among widespread strikes. Paul Cockshott, a socialist computer scientist, has done some good work on this topic.

The market is failing quite badly right now, you have states trying to buy essential medical supplies from brokers. Also, the The "market" is an abstract notion which does not generate price (or anything for that matter). Prices are set by corporations which do accounting, planning, and resource allocation. They do so by taking into account both factors they control and those they don't. I don't see why this process which works on corporate level should all of a sudden fail at nation state level. If anything it should be easier because more factors can be controlled (there's a reason why large corporations always seek political influence).
