Should I do English with Creative Writing? I've written one short story and people seem to like it. "Really fucking good" were the words of a work colleague. He is in English and Film studies.

Hey /lit/, I've recently come across a lot of free time because of a sudden lack of employment. Before I head to /biz/ to avoid subsidized living and unemployment, I'd like to start reading again. I used to read a lot in high school, mostly just science fiction and Dean Koontz, but I'm looking to start a real personal library (electronic until I can afford lots of nice hardcovers) with some stuff of substance. What's a good starting place to get cultured for an edgy white failed engineer? Any recommendations are welcome :)
