The real experience has ceased to exist. There is no connection to the supposed represented (a day at the beach). What remains is a circuit of representations. Look at your grandparents' photographs of the beach. They are likely represented smiling supine on beach towels and squinting at the sun, or maybe they are pictured as a blob of color in the distant water. The ritual seen performed in the questionable image is not even the mimicry of a glamour-magazine photo shoot: it is the mimicry of itself. In this way the "day at the beach" evaporates and is replaced by its own representation. The photographers are not memorializing a moment in their lives: they are memorializing the act of memorializing. This is the idea of the hyperreal.
