Is this similar to Moby-Dick? I watched Aguirre and Apocalypse now and they both reminded me of Moby-Dick

So wait a minute, what exactly was so horrifying in Heart of Darkness?

Was "Belgian colonialism bad" literally the whole horror?

Seems melodramatic. Although I did like the resonance between the ancient Britons having been savages and the Congolese.

Looking through audible and the copy I got, despite saying unabridged, has censored the word "nigger" throughout the story. Is there an audiobook version that stays true to the original story without the censorship, preferably one I can grab on audible?

Why is 19th century modernist British literature so boring and wordy?

Hello, /lit/.
I recently discovered Conrad and he's seemed to be an interesting writer to me. Yet I've seen some really negative opinions on him here.
Could you explain why?
Especially this book.

I can't help it I really really love it. Don't know if we're counting it as a "novel" though.

I've been trying hard to get into Heart of Darkness. Having read it, I feel like I get the just of what Conrad was trying to say. However, i feel as if I am missing something. All essays and video lectures I have found on the book either just summarize the plot with no reflection on the meaning, or focus entirely on modern left-leaning topics such as "is Conrad a racist and sexist."

Can anyone point me to some good essays on this book? I really want to study what Conrad was trying to say to his audience?
