For a complete beginner to philosophy, what do I need to read and understand before I can read and understand Schopenhauer, and how long will it take?

What is the way to the cessation of feeling? The way leading to the cessation of feeling is right view and rightful concentration. When a noble disciple learns the origin of feeling, the cesssation of feeling and the way to the cessation of feeling he thus makes way to the end of suffering.
