Is Cormac's writing New Sincerity? It's not a label I've ever heard applied to him but I think he fits the bill better than anybody I've read. He writes in a shamelessly affected style, he writes unironically and straightforwardly about themes like "War is God" and "We're carrying the fire." He clearly tries to be profound.

Notwithstanding whether you actually think he succeeds, do you think that the praise his writing has received is evidence that DFW was right and that New Sincerity is a real trend?

I recently read The Road and was interested on /lit's opinion of it. From what I understand one of the big ideas of the novel is death and humanities capacity to be both good an bad.

Survival genre films give me a massive boner.
I thought books like that would get me excited about reading again.

Like natural disasters, apocalypse, killer virus, ect.
Where can I find some survivalist books, huh?

I just found it very boring and I thought Holden wasn't at all like me, or rather a bad, overdone characterization of teenage angst

maybe it was the fact that I read it during MCAS (no child left behind tests) but that should have made me feel more angsty

pic related but I also really liked To Kill a Mockingbird

Hey lit,

First of all, merry Christmas/Hanukkah/whatever it is you celebrate.

I recently read The Road by Cormac McCarthy and I've never been so touched (inb4 faggot) by a book before. Just the way that the man put everything into protecting the boy from the impossible reality was... Chilling. Anyways, I want to read more of his writing but don't know where to start. Is there any other book that stacks up to this one?

Thanks.

I finished this book last night and I liked it quite a bit. It had great pacing and while it was a bit short it worked well and it felt very... concise. It was a very somber book but the strength that the father character showed was inspiring. Just the mindless pushing forward in the face of hopelessness because he loves his son.

9/10 would recommend. Curious what /lit/ thinks about this one.

Going camping this weekend, and looking for a good book that I can crush in 3-4 afternoons at the most.

For some reason I have a hankering for a post-apocalyptic story. Is "The Road" as great a read as I have heard? I haven't seen the film (and have no intention of doing so).

Also: If anyone knows any other great recommendations for a post-apocalyptic book, by all means please let me know.

So, I see this novel posted here all the time, and found it for cheap in a used bookstore last weekend. Finished it today.

It wasn't bad, but I don't see why it gets so much praise. The only other thing I've read by McCarthy was Blood Meridian, which was completely fucking masterful and seems light years better. The Road just feels like a lesser work from a great author. I'm a little underwhelmed.

Some of the biblical, lyrical prose felt out of place at times, as if it were at odds with the more terse, hard-boiled Hemingway-esque prose that makes the bulk of the novel (and in my opinion, suits the story much better).

There were also some very strangely, though possibly intentional, hilarious moments.

Opinions, /lit/? Is the movie worth watching? Other McCarthy I should read? I hear good things about Sutree.

I'm not sure if you're asking for disturbing in the sense of merely describing physical violence, but The Road had several disturbing moments.

The theatrical rendition seemed ok at the beginning for a few visual effects, but sucked in general (as with most books turned into movies).

Do you need to be a father to appreciate this book? I'm not and I don't feel particularly connected with the characters. Wasn't close with my father either.

After i read it i loved it, and i really hate myself for not liking reading when i was younger. Anyone here ever felt that? Also can anyone recommend me some good post apocalyptic books?
