Anyone else on /lit/ a physics/philosophy frag? I'm a fifth year undergrad in physics, philosophy, and computer science and dear god, do I feel alone. Institutional physics is so pragmatic, all the interesting philosophical or foundational issues of QM/QFT are dismissed. I've had professors tell me that they're also interested in those problems, but getting 'bread' (funding) is more important (this is always followed by cackles of laughter). Institutional philosophy is a trainwreck. There's some (albeit very infrequent) okay continental philosophy, but phenomenology? Lacanian topology? Heidegger? No thanks. Analytic philosophy means well, but it's plagued by bad intuition based methodology, not to mention most professors are ignorant of science generally. Anyone in philosophy of physics? Does it get any better?

"All the world's a stage..." is Jacques' "philosophy," not necessarily Shakespeare's. It is all too easy to confute the attitudes of a writer's characters with those of the writer himself. Hence the incessant accusations that "Shakespeare was an anti-Semite! Shakespeare was a misogynist!" This is an obvious mistake.

You can get a current Kindle now for like 70 bucks. Do yourself a favor and get it. It rekindled my love of reading, I never thought something like this would, but my favorite time of day is picking up my Kindle and reading WHATEVER I want to read. There is a reason these are so popular. You think the entire population that DOES read "loves real books" or "loves the smell of books"?

Thats just /lit/, and /lit/ is retarded.

If you love to read, get an e-reader.

If you love to have people know you read, and you need a physical copy of the book to make you feel like you are accomplishing something, and you need a bookcase to show off all the things you "accomplished", then don't get an e-reader.

Like I said, it's 70 bucks. If you don't like it, you can return it, or keep it and still read your print books. You won't be returning it.

I thought this might be a place to discuss academia.

I am in my second year of college, and after 3 semesters (counting this one), I have taken no classes that form any sort of path, or selection of what I want to "study". It seems as if everyone else around me knows where they are headed.

As soon as a take a class that is interesting, I immediately become deeply involved, do well, and end up moving on. I am going nowhere.

Anyone with me?

Do you react/respond in writing to every book you read, /lit/?
I feel like I should be doing responses to everything I read.
