Inclusion of romance. Making the instructor and father narrative arcs more compact and profound. Even the loss of the Sci-Fi elements (battle suits & cyborg dogs) improves the narrative because it forces the soldiers to fight as a band of brothers with greater group-identity and philia; rather than being individual super heros flying around the battle field 400m+ apart.
