I regularly meet contemporary British writers — for instance: I've talked at length with Will Self, Joe Dunthorne and David Mitchell in the last six months. Most of them are fairly interesting, but it seems as if it's considered rather tawdry for an author to be anything other than ordinary. Consequently, the brighter (and younger) they are, the more excruciatingly boring they try to be. That said, the intellect of someone like Will Self is immediately apprehensible. I've also met a lot of comedians, actors and politicians. All things considered, the former set are invariably the most talented conversationalists.

This is all through organising events for a university society.
