>On looking a little closer, we find that inorganic matter presents a constant conflict between chemical forces, which eventually works dissolution; and on the other hand, that organic life is impossible without continual change of matter, and cannot exist if it does not receive perpetual help from without. This is the realm of finality; and its opposite would be an infinite existence, exposed to no attack from without, and needing nothing to support it; [Greek: haei hosautos dn], the realm of eternal peace; [Greek: oute giguomenon oute apollumenon], some timeless, changeless state, one and undiversified; the negative knowledge of which forms the dominant note of the Platonic philosophy. It is to some such state as this that the denial of the will to live opens up the way.

Why is contentment characterised as an undiversified emotion by Schopenhauer?

It completely renders your brain useless to the point where absolutely no reasoning works. Though I prefer to be just an admirer because it's even more scary to be rejected or lose her. Why is none of my knowledge helping me against that... Physical attraction is not even close to that feeling, this is the highest form of euphoria I have ever experienced.

What are some good books on philosophy of life? Preferably obscure ones because I've read everything but nothing that I felt was really perfect for me. I've read Nietzsche, Schopenhauer (who I liked best), Kierkegaard, Sartre, Epicurus, Tolstoy, Russell, a long list of aphorists, Zapffe, Cioran etc. I tried to read Heidegger but I couldn't but his concepts that I read summarized are something I'd like to read more of. The concept of snapping of the robotic mind we have during our daily lives and coming into reality. Schopenhauer Will to live is similar and is a concept I've been interested in reading more of.

I'm looking for people that talk about aesthetic contemplation other than Schopenhauer. I want to read something by someone who writes about the role of aesthetic contemplation and beauty in our lives. Not just in an abstract way but goes into the actual act of us sitting down to consume art.

Other than Schopenhauer and Nietzsche what authors have written books that can be a good guide through life? Something that you can reread often. Preferably something more obscure and not posted often on this board.

Who are some life affirming philosophers?

"All this explains the painful impression with which we are seized when, after studying genuine thinkers, we come to the writings of Fichte and Schelling, or even to the presumptuously scribbled nonsense of Hegel, produced as it was with a boundless, though justified, confidence in German stupidity. With those genuine thinkers one always found an honest investigation of truth and just as honest an attempt to communicate their ideas to others. Therefore whoever reads Kant, Locke, Hume, Malebranche, Spinoza, and Descartes feels elevated and agreeably impressed. This is produced through communion with a noble mind which has and awakens ideas and which thinks and sets one thinking. The reverse of all this takes place when we read the above-mentioned three German sophists. An unbiased reader, opening one of their books and then asking himself whether this is the tone of a thinker wanting to instruct or that of a charlatan wanting to impress, cannot be five minutes in any doubt; here everything breathes so much of dishonesty". Has there ever been truer words spoken?

I've read lots of philosophers and Schopenhauer is the first philosopher who spoke to my soul. Is there anyone in a similar vein? I've read Nietzsche but his style of writing is too flowery and pretentious for me. I've also read some other philosophers but they were too depressing. To me Schopenhauer makes me happy and optimistic about life.

I got physically sick while reading Schopenhauer today. I was approximately halfway through the first book of WWR, around the part with the concept-spheres, where he distinguishes between the intuitive knowledge that comes from the understanding possessed by man and animals and rational knowledge, unique to man giving him the ability to reflect, though sometimes to his detriment, especially with regard to activities like billiards and archery that rely on feeling and immediacy and suffer when pedantically examined by the higher faculty.

what mean?

And so he did away with eleven of the twelve categories, leaving only causality. Very well. What then makes perception intellectual, rather than merely sensible, simply because there is only one pure concept of the understanding rather than twelve?
