I studied journalism in school and found it helpful, though not geared towards what I really wanted. I have a friend who got a History degree, as well as college for print journalism, and he's a contributing editor to a pretty big magazine in Toronto now. He was a good writer to begin with, and probably would have made it regardless, but he told me he wouldn't have got the job if not for his education.

Fucking hell. Can we get an official list of writers that make you look both educated and hip?

Protip: Listing DFW only makes you look autistic

What e-reader do you recommend if I'm looking after these several features:
- Can read well pirated mobi/epub (optionally pdf too)
- 6 inch screen size
- Preferably around 50 pounds
- Light strong enough to read in dark

Why was Dostoevsky anti-semetic? Was he just a nasty racist bigot? Or did he have reason to be so?

So whenever Dostoevsky is brought up, we talk about the same works (C&P, Notes from Underground, The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov, Demons). I was wondering if anybody has read his earlier works, like Poor Folk or Humiliated and Insulted. What were your impressions of his stuff less frequently spoken about?

Well, I'm doomed /lit/. Clearly balding and being a good writer don't mix.

Hey /lit/
its my first time posting here. I'm looking to get into Dostoevsky; and was wondering where to start on his works. I'm a complete pleb when it comes to literature, but I was dragged to a Dostoevsky lecture at my uni, and become intrigued immediately.
I want to get through his entire body of work and want a list that would make it a bit easier to understand his thought process and message.
Recommended translations of his books also
thanks

I'm reading Notes from Underground, and it seems like Dostoevsky doesn't really like the French that much. What does this guy have against French people?

Hey, /lit/ I was wondering if you guys could help me out. So, for as long as I lived my mother and brother (who are both Russian) love and adore Fyodor Dostoevsky. They hail him as the greatest writer of all time. But since I was born in America unlike them, I don't know any Russian and I don't have time to learn it but I want to read his work so badly. My problem is I cant decide what translation to read. Does anyone have any suggestions?

tl;dr I need Fyodor Dostoevsky translations. Good ones.

Getting some B-Day cash soon, and I plan on spending some of it on books.

Quick question is, should I get Crime and Punishment or The Brothers Karamazov?

I could always get both, but just in case...

Anyone here in a position that they are unable to find a good author or book to read?

Dostoevsky has spoiled me, I have yet to find an author to match the joy and reflection his works offered me.

In his journal, Dostoevsky wrote what might be a neat argument if you want a reason to believe in god.

(I'm paraphrasing)
If there was no god then all men would kill themselves or die in despair.
Clearly this state of affairs would result in the end of the human race.
Therefore, god must exist otherwise we wouldn't be alive now.

Of course, like most arguments, this does ask you to accept some rather sketchy assumptions, and in the end it probably isn't of much value. But it did make me think, so I thought I'd include it in the thread.

/lit/, let's talk about sadomasochism in literature.

--Notes from Underground
-Atlas Shrugged
-Fight Club

These are some very recognizable works that deal extensively with sadomasochism.
What I'd like to talk more about, would be masochism.

Saddism can be easily understood, because the one deriving pleasure from inflicting pain on others gets a sense of power and superiority.

Masochism is different, the person deriving pleasure from pain is embarrassed and humiliated. What conditions have to be present for you to be conditioned this way? I heard that if you assosciate pain with pleasure, you can become masochistic.

Another way I could see it happening, is that you are not used to authentic acts of love being bestowed upon you, and the only contact you ever received from people you admired, was pain, embarrassment, and spurn.

Someone, please help me continue this thought.

I nominate Crime and Punishment, it practically defines the word 'novel'.

Hey /lit/, just finished Crime and Punishment, which is the first book I read after years. The book is rather depressing for me. But what I can't understand is, what the fuck made it such a 'masterpiece' as people claim it to be. I didn't find anything very intriguing about the book, while I was expecting that it would have something profound and make me think at least a little after reading the book. Are the other 'masterpieces' like "War and Peace", "Great Expectations", "1984", "The Count of Monte Cristo", etc of the same category as this one, a rough story much similar to today's movies elongated into a book with vague and many a times unnecessary details? Either I must lack the intelligence and reading ability due to habit of comprehending the book properly, or is it just a weak novel like I understand it is? Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the read, but I didn't find anything great or extraordinary with it, same and even worse with Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief". The bunch of Sidney Sheldon novels I read years ago seemed much better to me, but maybe that's just stupid me. Can you guys please shed some light into this and what I am missing? Recommendations would be much welcome too as the sticky is very vast for a currently casual reader like me.
(Excuse me for being a naturally bad poster)
