Started reading Paradise Lost recently, and just finished Book II. It's pretty hard for me to read, unless I do it aloud, in which case I breeze through it. Is this common? Also, how often does Milton refer to other ancient myths and borrow from Dante? So far it seems like it's all he ever does. Also, what's with him mentioning other Gods wily-nily?

General discussion too why not

Hey, /lit/. My A2-coursework module gives us one primary novel and a theme, which are Paradise Lost and "Death&Suffering" respectively.
I get to choose the secondary and tertiary texts. Of the following, which ones are the most suitable? Feel free to suggest your own.
Therese Raquin
>As I Lay Dying
>Vile Bodies
>The Pillowman
>The BellJar

never came to this board before until now
I used to read all the time (librarian in the family) but it's tailed off a bit. Is there an essentials list? Can anyone recommend a lifechanger to get me back into it?

What does /lit/ think about paradise lost? I just finished book two (purchased the book today) and other then the excessive mental masturbation to ancient mythology, I found the story to be quite compelling and interesting. I thoroughly enjoy the blank verse as well, I can barely write fifty lines let alone 1000ish per book.
