I finished this puppy a week ago (read it one day).

It won Steinbeck the nobel prize? I don't know...

The book was "ok", but it didn't make me cry or anything (apparently a lot of weak minded /lit/izens did when they read the book).

I suppose my question is this: is this book good?

I read it, and I'm not quite sure.
****WARNING, SPOILERS BELOW***

As far as themes and symbols are concerned, I got this:
-Animalizing the most basic components of the human condition manifested in Lenny
-Paralleling dogs to humans (i.e. calling curley's wife a bitch, giving commands to Lenny to "attack", Candy's old dog is a metaphor of himself--in that it is an old dog that isn't much use anymore, and curly acts like a small dog picking fights with bigger dogs to compensate for something--to anyone who has ever been around dogs, this is a common phenomenon)
-Romanticizing ranching labourer lifestyle
-American Gun culture
-Vigilantism

I'm sure there is more. Still, unlike Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men prose isn't poetical--it is concise and at times trim, but I only found myself admiring it once (in the second chapter).

Someone else have any input?

Of Mice and Men was the only good book ever written.

>great novel.
Actually quite sad and I felt a bit empty at the end. The parallels between the death of Candy's dog and the finals scene was simple but well done. All the characters seemed tragically doomed.

>This was the first novel by Steinbeck I read, any recommendations on others? I hear "Grapes of Wrath" is good, but quite long and slow moving at times.

Honestly has to be one of the best books I've read. Finished about a week ago, never felt so inclined to reminisce and reflect on a book, but it was just so damn good. Thoughts /lit/?

Hello /lit/ I am currently writing an English essay on Of Mice and Men, and am typing about the theme of not being able to choose your own destiny in life. I believe there is a word for that, if anyone knows can you please let me know?

Hey /lit/ I wrote this short story or w.e right now and I want your opinion on it.

The lost soul runs through the town screaming. He is what he he feels is a failure.
All his life he has searched for the meaning of his existence,WHy? When I have not obeyed my mother or father!?"
What I have done has disgraced our life. Nothing can fix our farm now" An old man walking down the road meets
up with the boy. He tells him this,"Son why do you run around town
yelling of your problems to others expecting someone to say somethingto you or help you? Why dont you just
learn from your lesson? The way to learn son is not to live up to others expectations of you. It is for you
to learn from your mistakes. No oneshould judge you son. Your mistakes dont make who you are. It is your
ability to comprehend and deal with lifes problems. The young man was perplexed by this thought
"so you are saying it's not my problems that people will identify me with its who I am?" "of course young man what else should
it be?" The young man questioned"Then how do I deal with lifes problems? The old man looked up at the sun.
He looked up and seemed to be giving much thought to this question. When the old man replied he said,
"IM GOING TO RIP OFF YOUR FUCKING DICK AND SLAM IT DOWN YOUR ANNOYING THROAT AND THEN TAKE OUT MY KNIFE AND CUT OFF YOUR HEAD!
PULL YOUR EYES OUT OF YOUR EYESOCKETS AND SHIT A GREAT SHIT INTO THEM!

"And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering."

Times when it is okay to cry.

1. When your dog dies.

2. When Lennie dies.
