i'm probably liken that to a bubble bath of some sort, with each conversation entrapped in its own "bubble" and the conglomeration of all those concealing w/e the baseline water represents about communication on a direct level. since you used the phrase "drowned out", it seems like you'd have to encapsulate yourself and whoever you were talking to in one of the multitudinous bubbles in order to say anything, which cuts you off from the majority of other "bubbles", even though they're most interconnected
