The Vienna circle arose at a time where it became apparent that formal (predicate) logic can not only be used to juggle with argument but can capture clusters of theories in mathematics (all in one, via set theory). 40 years later, the computer arose out of those formal logic considerations (Hilbert=>Russel=>Gödel=>Turing, young Wittgenstein fitting into the Russel time).

Wittensteins first book is the claim that it's completely pointless to talk about philosophy that refuses to be put into those logical terms.
The second book turns to the individuals use of language/logic, how it relates to other individuals and, again, how many statements in previous philosophical thinking are highly problematic.

It's hard to pin down in a term what he's famous for, because he's mostly famous for debunking.
