>character takes his bi-weekly shit
>author chooses to leave out the part where he spends 30 minutes grunting and sweating using the plunger to force the turds down
It takes like one line at most.

Plato's Theory of Forms is literally THE greatest philosophical idea/conceptualisation ever.

If I wanted to rebuild my knowledge with a solid foundation, what are the essential books and topics that serve such a strong foundation?

Can we develop a list?

Things like logic, grammar, writing, thinking, philosophy etc.

There was an autodidact thread a month or so ago that covered a decent amount relevant to what i'm after, but I can't find the recommendations from that thread.

How do I know if something is aesthetic and is there anything objective about it?

I'm speaking in terms of art, literature, architecture etc.

For example - say I tell someone I absolutely LOVE a piece of literature by Tolstoy and they tell me it sucks, or I think author X's prose is beautiful but someone else thinks otherwise. Are differences in what you think is aesthetic or of high quality entirely subjective? Similar scenarios apply for admiring architecture, like some classical building vs a postmodern piece of shit, and so on.

I just finished Thus Spoke Zarathustra and really enjoyed it. I find myself agreeing with him on most of his points (except the women hating stuff he shoe-horns in every 50 pages), but as someone who leans more towards the religious side of existentialism i'm conflicted.

What book talks about Heracles' 12 labours, the three headed dog and the Trojan Horse?

I read The Iliad and none of these were even mentioned. WTF.
