I've read American Gods and Neverwhere. Neither really jumped out at me, though I guess AG had me at the start.

If I didn't get on with these two is worth trying more or are most kinda like this?

I guess I'm not really into magical stuff with no rules. For instance, the fantasy in Neverwhere just had no structure to it, was just like the angle, the weirdo fagget assassin and the whole of London below just weren't congruent with each other or anything else. The universe was a hodgepodge with no explanation.
