So the goal of rationalism is, as Socrates said through Plato, to be able to understand everything about the world and it's make up through a simple conversation. What is lurking behind that quote is rationalism dogma. The idea is to learn more and learn quickly. How? A good foundation. Now what is a good foundation? A good foundation is the basis of human thought, and creativity. There are seemingly infinitely better foundations. How do we get there? Humans have two forms of logic or thinking, deductive logic and inductive logic. A calculator can do deductive logic, it's always correct of done correctly. The most important part of knowledge is getting good inductive logic. Inductive knowledge is in the scheme of the universe, at most only partly more correct than the foundation it tries to supplant. Inductive logic is rationalist deductive is empiricism. Science is empirical. That's why it says nothing about how we should live our lives, it's incapable of that. That's why it lends itself to atheism.
