Because most bookcases have at least two fixed shelves, and you end up with narrow shelves and books that won't fit where you want them upright, so the choice is to lay them down, on their edge, or put them far away from their appropriate spot. Also, sometimes you just need to have a stack to save room. I'd rather not waste space and screw up the order constantly.

You must read Calvino, especially if you know a close relative. Here's my standard fiction/lit section, first two shelves, showing most of the Calvino I have.
