i have 4 hours remaining of the way of kings and literally nothing has happened. this has got to be the worst book ever. is the other books do anything? eragon is a better book than this
story line 1: kaladin is a bridgerunner leader which is a fodder frontline to place a bridge across a "shattered plain" for the army. he runs with it on his side, which gets him in trouble and ruins his generals plan. they punish him and leave him to die in a storm, he survives.
story line 2: a girl is an apprentice to a lady. she tries to steal her wand and gets caught
story line 3: a prince is talking to other princes about shardblades and how hard it is to be a prince

this is all that happens in a 30 hour book. that is insane

3rd time trying to finish a way of kings and 30 chapters in and literally nothing happens. Some guy running with a bridge which makes no sense. When on earth did ppl ever fight battles and used a person who ran with a bridge?. Some boring girl learning how to be a socialite or something. Some prince who talks to his aids about nothing. Wtf is the story supposed to even be about?

Well I found this to be mediocre and poor in relation to its popularity and the aura it seems to carry in fantasy communities. It is on par with a 40k or Star Wars novel in terms of quality and depth (which is fine), only people seem to be suffering from mass-psychosis where they all pretend it isn't and this bloated superhero book is placed first on a bunch of lists. Now I'm sceptical about picking up a new popular series, I was thinking about Malazan but the same people seem to be recommending that too.

What's the sci-fi equivalent of epic 8+ book fantasy adventure series like malazan or the stormlight archive? Almost every sci-fi series I read shits itself by the last book like enders game or wasn't meant to be a series to begin with like robots and foundation.

why do people like this book/series? i'm like listening to it on chapter 10 and it just sucks. world building sucks. characters suck. there is no direction or overall story. nothing interesting like game of thrones. it tries to use different povs but like one pov is from a girl trying to be a maid or something. names suck, theres no rhyme or reason unlike lotr, its just like a parody of fantasy names. shallon, caladin, dalinar. just super lame. i dont see how this can be adapted to a tv show

Brandon Sanderson is great. The Way of Kings is amazing

Most fantasy authors now a days are soi tier neckbeards and "nice guys", are there still any good fantasy books that aren't self insertion fantasies or soft-core porn (like that fat American authors work).

I picked up Way of Kings last week and am wondering if I should finish it. I'm already about 600 pages into the book.

This book just hasn't made me feel anything. I haven't been intrigued with anything in the world, I haven't derived much of a real sense of emotion from character interactions, and the plain prose hasn't really helped. I just feel like I'm wasting my time, and this is no offence to anyone that likes this book, it's just not my thing it seems.

So does this book pay off or should I put it down if I'm still not interested? Thank you in advance.

What an amazing journey this book has been. I'm so glad I picked it up, even though my native language is not English. I had too re-read some pages now and then. But WOW, I owe you one /sff/.

One of the best (if not the best) fantasy books I've ever read.

The Way of Kings.

Without spoiling anything it begins with a magic wielding slave making an attempt on someone's life monk/ninja style.

Magic includes throwing bolts of power and gravity manipulation.

Characters weld ancient suits of armor and sort of relatable to the ninja of Naruto in that they are gods amongst men.

should i start way of kings or malazan?

should i start reading way of kings or the foundation series by asimov. what are your thoughts on each series?

So I just got done with The Way of Kings.

I liked Kaladin and his entire story arc, but I had to force myself through Shallan's arc. She really came off as a spoiled brat and frankly I didn't like her at all.

Anyone else feel this way?
