>be frank "hack" herbert
>be too dumb to make anything of value
>rip off lawrence of arabia, a princess of mars and the sabres of paradise and replace oil with drugs
>get praised forever by pseuds who think babbys first sci fi novel is the deepest thing ever and the basic message that "AUTHORITY BAD" is somehow deep and intellectual
why is this book praised so much? it's trash

Nufag here.
Is Dune a good first choice to dip into for science fiction?

I just finished the second book and started the third, so Paul just suddenly walked into the desert (and died but is maybe the preacher?) but apparently his son has all of his thoughts and personality this is getting a bit crazy should I keep reading?

Is Dune scary? I want to read it because everyone is hyping up the new movie coming out but I get crippling panic attacks with any kind of horror, even thrillers with horror aspects. My boyfriend usually has to curate what we watch beforehand to make sure there isn’t gore, sexual assault, extreme violence or otherwise creepy stuff.

Someone mentioned there is giant earth worms and that can swallow up people and I’m worried that will trigger an anxiety attack. I’m a 23 year old woman from Colombia living in Toronto by the way.

This whole series is such a fucking chore to read.
I can't be the only one who thinks this, right?
I've been reading this series for like two years now (on Heretics of Dune at the moment). I read a couple of pages, put it down, read something else, and then repeat. In every book there are like two or three compelling, dramatic short scenes, and the rest of it is philosophical rambling. I think I sort of get what Herbert is trying to say in regards to his views on history, collective memory, and the deconstruction of the hero, but fucking God he takes a long time to say it.
I don't regret reading these books, I mean, they are interesting, unique, and somewhat thought-provoking, but I would never describe them as 'good reads', or recommend them to anyone. They are very much a product of the hard-boiled, super serious sci-fi of the 60s, complete with the obligatory fixation with drugs, and I don't think they have necessarily aged that well.
What do you guys think?

I'm not sure if this is the right board to post on as this is my first time on /lit/. So I have been recommended this book multiple times and that it is pretty much devoid of any political correctness or agendas. but they could be wrong and it is the complete opposite woke SJW shit. Is this book worth reading? If not are there any other science fiction book that you guys would recommend?
