This is just my pet theory but the modern conception of self is impossible without language. Sure you can imagine yourself having a personality, and preferences and being part of a social community with only grunts and clicks but it isn't really comparable.

So based off of the sociological development of language your brain gets a set which it can form its self from. Studies have shown that neurological pathways are different between native speakers of different languages.

Reading in this sense lets you orient as close as possible to another person's self. After all, it's not like they could define it without language. Then you can take the parts that you like and synthesize your own novel position of what you call you.

So I think reading, or at least thinking in a language is extremely important to develop as a person.

Why are female authors consistently so much better than male authors at the craft? What is it about the field of literature that makes women excel, that they are unable to find in other fields? It seems that writing is the one main realm in which they easily dominate.
