I'm reading through this right now. I've already read a good portion of Hindu literature, but none of them explain the cultural and social aspects of Hindu society. This book is really good if you want to understand the nuances of Hinduism and how India has changed under imperial rule. Kanchi Sancaracarya even explains why there are apparent inconsistencies in the Vedas and why they aren't contradictory.
