So I'm thinking of handing out CD's with a little library of fiction and non-fiction to trick or treaters so they can enjoy it after they've over loaded on candy. Anybody have any suggestions on open source/public domain fiction appropriate for 5-15 year olds? currently in the fiction section I have the atomic robos from the past 4 years of free comic book day.

I'd like to write a depressing story, something which would make every reader go like the picture, something utterly crushing.

What kind of things does /lit/ consider sad? The basic "everyone I love dies" doesn't really do it anymore.

You know what I've just realised?

I absolutely DESPISE Jodi Picoult.
And her books.

Granted, she writes relatively well, and she knows exactly how to play out her plot and characters so that she can get the exact reaction she wants.

But still - "My Sister's Keeper" pretty much is generic chick lit that makes me want to ram something like Joyce's "Ulysses" down her throat. Write something with BALLS, woman.

tl;dr: Jodi Picoult sucks ass. Discuss.
