I know he hated the utilitarian thinking, but jesus dude, if you write political theory, it should be somehow applicable. Disdain for materialism? Okay but he lived through the most industrialized war in human history, with clashing ideologies on all sides, you can't just stand on the side and say how you disagree with the materialistic turn the world took, it's do or die. I find the whole stance dishonest. He should have been a selfhelp guru instead of political theorist.
