Hey /sffg/ I've been wondering where the idea of "unwitting doppelgangers" (my own term) began. And by that I mean a doppelganger who shares memories of the person they are imitating, but who was "created" by some other force and do not initially know why they were created or possibly even that they are a doppelganger.

The oldest I can think of is Solaris from 1961.

Don't know about any more until Lisa in Silent Hill (1999) and Maria in Silent Hill 2 (2001).

And then not again until Channel Zero: No-end house (2017) and Twin Peaks: The Return (2017).
