I've been trying for over a month to get through this book, and I just can't. The English translation is horrendous. Regardless, many people tell me that the final chapters of the book make the journey to get there worth it.

Is it? Or should I just move on?

I just finished reading Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. It's the first time I've read anything by Eco and I have to say it was easily the most fascinating and, dare I say, mindblowing thing I've ever read. Although I must say that I really think the book would be better and more effective if it was a bit shorter. It doesn't really need to be 800 pages long, especially when you consider that there is way too much information thrown at you and when you boil it down, he keeps repeating the same "punchline" again and again, with the variables exchanged. I mean, it's hilarious and thought-provoking, but it's too many variations on the exact same "joke".

so yeah, amazing book, but a bit too long for its own good, I'd say it could easily do with 200 pages less.

What is /lit/'s opinion?

what does /lit/ think? So far I enjoy it, but I find Eco to be a little be snarky and condescending.
