I've posted on various boards this idea:
>How would you fix Tolkiens Orcs?
>Tolkien Himself had problems with how he depicted orcs so one-dimensionally.

My thoughts:

>Orcs/Goblins are Much less "ravenous, pointlessly cruel savages incapable of organizing outside of direct intimidation or fear" and much more "Vogons" combined with "Ferengi"; that is capable of actually building institutions.
>Orcs/Goblin society is a weird combination of stalinist-style-totalitarian-bureaucracy and 19th-century-cutthroat-capitalism.
>Orc cities don't have people literally stabbing each other in the back all day;
>Orc clothes, at least of those of some status, aren't torn dirty rags especially; they're cheaply made formal/business attire, tunics and the like; often from unconventional fabrics if they're not "connected" or of a slightly lower office..
>they don't eat sentients or use sentient leather, at least not intentionally. (again ruthless capitalists might just fucking lie about the origins of what they're selling).
>Loyalty to Melkor, Sauron, the Witch King, etc... is enforced with the help of a secret police/inquisition.
>whole thing is reminicent of a MLM/Cult-deal; as far as how it's ideologically sold.
>Literacy is more common, though definitions of what qualifies as "Literacy" vary.
>Orc Armies are more or less "Privateers" or "East India Company"-type organizations, often underequipped and betting on the promise of seizing land/slaves/loot in order to turn profits.

Should Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings be considered Western Canon? He’s the only fantasy writer that has any literary merits and his works define fantasy as a genre.

Should it be considered Western Canon?
