Of course counterculture is part of it, but I think itss a little deeper than that. to be an atheist makes you necissarilly hold an antithetical reactionary pov. You have to actively not believe in a god. People dont find it cringe if you say idk, or I dont really buy into religion X. By its very nature it is strictly a reactionary pov so it tends to always come off as a jaded thing. Instead of seeing religion as a perpective (one that you dont necissarily need to jive with, but understand it as one non the less) it sees it as an essential wrong instead of poor interpretation. Someone who goes out of their way to not say "god damn it" or something along those lines just seems myopicand having a chip on their shoulders. Being able to use the religious paradigm without necissarily buying into it is a lot more natural. Most of the good "Athiests" still at some level apreciated spirituality instead of throwing the baby of religion out with the bath water. Thats why schopenhaur or nietzsche dont come off as anywhere neer as cringe as a fedorafag. They can utalize the language and some aspects of religion while also critiquing it. They are not blunt hammers of myopathy, but delecate chiselers who form and reshape instead of clumsily breaking down

So i guess its not athiesm per say that is manifestly cringe, but how it is most often utilized in a cringy baby out with the bathwater sort of way.

No, Since the hellins themselves largely aboundon it. If you read the works of anyone influenced by the pathagorians (virtually all the big names after) they subscribe to some kind of higher diesm and use the god off the old religion as archetypes and cultural tuchstones. Just Read Plato, Aristotle or cicero for example. In THe republic Plato wanted to completely restructure the religion to better serve the state and proper morality. Are you going to have a genuine religious experience, or simply a cultural illustration like st. peters day?

No. I think its best to bring back the deism that defined the height of the greco-roman, and later early Modern Europe. With evoking of pagan deities as art and qualities, while having a deeper metaphysic of The One. Escape from the false dichotomy.
