The Fault in Our Stars. I couldn't stand Hazel's voice and John Green's sense of humor.

I say this as someone who later on read Turtles All the Way Down and actually really enjoyed it, and have no snobbery towards genre fiction/YA.

TFIOS is awful, I recommend starting with Turtles All the Way Down which is WAY better.

I couldn't get past the first chapter of TFIOS because the main character's voice is too annoying. Turtles All the Way Down is John Green's actual masterpiece.

Turtles All the Way Down is his best book because it's the most personal and actually goes into what it's actually like to have OCD, whereas I don't think Green actually understands what having cancer is like. It's still a flawed novel though and doesn't spend enough time on some of the things it should.

Ignore the memes about John Green and read Turtles All the Way Down. It has some cringe-y parts to it, but as someone who also has OCD I feel that he captured the experience accurately.

David Foster Wallace and Cormac McCarthy wrote science fiction and Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote fantasy. Why hasn't there been a literary realistic YA novel since The Outsiders in 1967?

It has nothing to do with the retarded soyboy /pol/r9k/ meme.

John Green is a genre author who desperately wants to be taken seriously as a serious writer of serious fiction. If you read Turtles All the Way Down, you will see that the male love interest is constantly posting literary quotes from Shakespeare and Toni Morrison, among others, on his blog. Green is practically screaming "See? I know about real literature, so my YA book can be just as good as the things I'm referencing."

This is the real reason his male characters fail to get the girl. He wants to write a great American novel and great American novels like The Great Gatsby, The Sun Also Rises, and Gone with the Wind are tragedies about failed love.

Obviously Green isn't able to match his ambition, but if he is a "cuck" for writing failed romance than so is Shakespeare and fucking Hemingway.

>see the breakfast foods quote spammed on /lit/
>try readying The Fault in Our Stars, and the main character really is that obnoxious with her observations about things
>find out that John Green has OCD and wrote a new novel about having OCD
>Aza makes the same kinds of observations about these inane things, but in this novel it's dark as fuck because it's the result of a mental disorder rather than "le quirky personality XD"
>tfw John Green subconsciously made all his characters OCD, and Turtles All the Way Down is just the first time he's acknowledged it

Are there any novels about mental health, preferably about OCD, that don't suck?
