So much of supposedly great literature and art derives its impact from what is essentially a cheap trick: the simple concealment of meaning. What I mean is, the author will have a point to make, which, stated outright and clearly, is not so impressive on its own, so he will weave it into a pattern of fictional symbols. The idea is that the reader must work to unravel the symbols in order to get to the meaning, and when he finally does so he is more impressed by the meaning than is objectively warranted, since he had to labour to discover it.
