Probably the greatest book I’ve ever read. It’s all interesting, but especially so when Hans takes unto himself the “hermetic life.” The parts with Pepperkorn are witty, enlightening, and romantic to a fault with Claudia. Though the characters he meets, are what color the book so well; like the great discourses between settembrini and naphta. On top of all it is incredibly comfy, and the ideas about time, art, and human form are as elucidating as they are mesmerizing. The book itself is a hermetic exercise, and to get lost in it was a pleasure of the highest order

not my favourite, but I never see Felix Valloton mentioned
