>An early modernist novel, it received mixed reviews upon publication. Hemingway biographer Jeffrey Meyers writes that it is now "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work" and Hemingway scholar Linda Wagner-Martin calls it his most important novel

Why is it considered Hemingway's greatest work?

I'm looking for books which explore these following topics
>bohemien life in big cities
>fun when you were 20s and depression in the old age
>aimless and dangerous youth
>drugs abuse
>aesthetic life
>immoral behaviors

I've already read Less than Zero by Ellis, The sun also rises by Hemingway, Il piacere by D'annunzio, Paris Spleen by Baudlaire,

>They arrive in Spain and eat and eat and eat
The alternative title for this is "Fiesta" So i guess is should at least read to the part where it starts but what the fuck

I read this book 6 months ago, after having failed to get through two other Hemingway novels. I hated it. Like all the other hemingway novels I tried, I thought it was boring, and that Jake was supposed to be some stand-in for Heminway. Some cool heavy drinking journalist that was accepted by the bull fighting aficionados.

And for 6 months I forgot about that book, and my opinion on Hemingway remained unchanged. Boring and overrated.
Until 3 days ago my friend got diagnosed with cancer and told me he will likely never have children, and now all of a sudden so much of the book makes sense.

>everything jake does seems so meaningless because no matter what, he cant have a family, a legacy
>everything that jew does seems just as pathetic, because he DOES have a family and instead chooses to chase some random thot
>The bullfighter seems like a real man, because even tho what he is doing is equally as meaningless, he seems to want to eventually have children with the thot (he wants her to grow her hair out, to me suggests he wants a real relationship, why else would you care what some random hook-up does with her hair), and thats why he was one of the only characters I respect

I am sure there are a bunch of other important themes, but, is that what great literature is? Books that impact you even long after you have read them? Have you had similar experiences, what were they?

>inb4 hurrr its about the lost generation, Yes I know there are lots of different themes and interpretations to this book

>"An ingenious algorithmist, even lectured at an haute école," said the Count, uncorking another bottle of champagne from the salted ice bucket, "but what little time is left in his day, he spends it on adjusting his computer. And he tweaks the most minute of things. Thus, he cares not for business ventures, and I was not able to tempt him to work for me." The champagne was brilliant. "I have likewise tried to convince his son, who inherited his talent. Alas, the son also rices."

Just finished picrel. Initially I thought it was about the drunken hedonistic lifestyle of the Lost Generation and its hollowness, or the struggles of impotence. But then I realized the lesson was quite simple and timeless: don’t listen to what a woman says only what she does

>The dialogue is so truncated throughout the entire book that it's difficult to tell whether characters are acting autistic or if you are just supposed to infer a larger conversation taking place
>At least half the book is just characters going back to the bar to drink, and names of what they're drinking
>Main character is just a bougie prick wandering around Europe blowing large amounts of money on booze and travel
>Comfy setting and atmosphere throughout the book though, every scene sounds comfy in a way that doesn't even really exist in 2020 + 2
>Based characters all hate kikes

I have no idea what I just read, this book is nothing like any other book I have ever read. I didn't hate it, but I have no idea why it's popular or why anyone cares about it.

Chapter 12 or picrel is the comfiest thing I've ever read.

I want to read more stories that are like Chapter 12. Stories about bros going on fishing trips or the like and having picnics and talking about love and stuff.

The Sun Also Rises is great to read after A Moveable Feast because it's based off some of the events in AMF. I also enjoyed his short stories and The Old Man and the Sea. A Farewell to Arms is great if you're looking for a more full length novel. Currently reading For Whom the Bell Tolls and it's great so far

>book about post WW1 society
>Full of simps, cuckolds, thots, roasties, hedonists, narcissists, materialists, niggers and impotents

I see, our society was always rotten. There were no good old times.
