To think on your own can be done in virtue of a well-established tradition, which philosophy is. With that idea in mind, we have the Socratic Dialogue which can reach aletheia by means of dialectic. But we should be frank: none of us is as brilliant and insistent as Socrates.

To add to this - even Socrates and the great pre-Socratics had had their own ancient mythological tradition prior to inquiring in philosophy, which in the contemporary state of abundance in philosophy (with nihilistic hesitance), there is no excuse to be philosophically putrid. At least filter through the philosophical works from the field you are interested to explore.

If you want to be taken seriously, you should learn to live seriously.
