Learning Mathematics does not require you to read Principa Mathematica or Euclid's elemnets, instead you can pick up any college textbook that has been refined and designed to get main the ideas acrosss.

So why does learning Philosophy to many seem to boil down to reading all the Major works in their entirety, Why aren't there textbooks that simply get the main ideas accross, why the obssesion with primary sources?

It seems that to philosophers the authors and the history of philosophy matter more than the ideas and the search for truth. This puts Philosophy at the same level as History and Trivia.

>Newton himself was well aware of this situation. He realized that the philosophers objected to his theory of gravitation because it "explained" neither gravity nor inertia. In a letter addressed to Leibnitz in a Journal, Newton writes:

>To understand the motions of the planets under the influence of gravity without knowing the cause of gravity is as good a progress in philosophy as to understand the frame of a clock and the dependence of the wheels upon one another without knowing the cause of the gravity of the weight which moves the machine is in the philosophy of the clockwork.

>Newton regarded his theory of gravitation as analogous to the description of a clockwork that keeps the planets moving. He agreed that the derivation of the theory from a more general and intelligible principle would contribute to philosophical progress; but as far as "modern science" was concerned, Newton claimed that progress had been made if observable motions could be derived from a law, even though the law were not "intelligible." This is what he meant by his famous statement, '' I don't invent hypotheses." He preferred less intelligible laws which agreed with the facts to highsounding hypotheses which did nothing much to "save appearances."

/a/ bro here. No bully please.

My teacher whom I greatly admire told me that Isaac Newton was a brainlet And that the world continues to suffer under his false propositions.

Newtonian thought is the precipice for my undertaking of Higher education but this has given me some pause.

Is my teacher correct in his assertion?

>dragging politics into a conversion about religion
>american politics at that

Also, you could just as easily attribute the lower IQ in the South/SouthWest to their relatively high non-white population as to their elevated levels of religiousness. Funny though as most atheists bend over backward to seem tolerant, but then they deride the south for being stupid, an area of the US that is more black.

How do I into Newton? I want to delve into one of the greatest minds of history, what would be the perfect set of books to comprehend this genius? Are any sort of contextual background reads recommended? I want to get as much insight as I can from his life, his works such as in physics and the intriguing philosophical masterpieces. So tell me /lit/ where do I start?

Your list of great scientists gets thinner after moving into the mid 17th. For the list of artist the same happens in 19th century. New flash having achievements in those fields may be based on funding.
